Château Cantereau is the latest addition to the Sarments Vignobles portfolio, to the west of the Pomerol appellation.

Since 2022, this 3-hectare vineyard has been undergoing organic conversion, planted entirely with Merlot on a sandy-gravel terroir and vinified with minimal use of wood. Its aim is to produce a Pomerol that is accessible, delicious and elegant.

Terroir and vines

Château Cantereau is planted with 100% Merlot on a sandy-gravelly terroir to the west of the Pomerol appellation, in Cantereau. These highly draining soils warm up quickly in the sun after rain. The grapes are harvested early and by hand to preserve the freshness of the fruit. The vineyard has been in organic conversion since the 2023 vintage, with a tillage approach and no use of weedkillers. As with all Stévenin vineyards, intelligent spraying, assisted by drones, means that treatments are limited to the strict minimum.

Vinification

Château Cantereau favours traditional vinification in stainless steel vats, with a plot-by-plot approach. To preserve the flavour and elegance of the Pomerol Merlot, the wine is matured in large 500-litre barrels, with a balance between new, one-wine and two-wine barrels, and in 750-litre terracotta amphorae.

Wine

Château Cantereau is the perfect way to enter the world of Pomerol with a wine that is a pleasure to drink, full of elegance and crisp fruit.

Since its first vintage in 2022, it has received rave reviews at the Primeur tastings.

The team

As with all the estates in the Sarments Vignobles group, Château Cantereau is run by Frédéric Stévenin with the help of his two Libourne partners, Anthony Appollot in the vineyards and Bruno Lacoste in the cellars.
